Welcome to Thompson Psychology

Hello!
My name is Bec, and I am a registered psychologist who is also a mother, wife, friend, advocate, and ally. While my practice is firmly grounded in evidence-based approaches, my therapeutic style is rooted in compassion, authenticity, and connection. I understand that coming to therapy can feel daunting, and I want you to know that this is a safe space for you.

Over the past eight years as a psychologist, I have had the privilege of deepening my knowledge across many areas of mental health. In 2021, after welcoming my second child, I embarked on my own journey into solo private practice.

My therapeutic approach is eclectic, flexible, and neuro-affirming. I draw from a range of evidence-based modalities, including:

  • Schema Therapy and other parts-work-informed approaches – A powerful integrative approach that combines elements of CBT, Gestalt, and psychodynamic therapy to address deep-rooted emotional patterns. It helps individuals identify and reshape unhelpful core beliefs and behaviours, fostering personal growth and emotional stability.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – A values-driven approach that supports individuals in accepting emotions, becoming more mindful of thoughts, and making intentional choices aligned with their personal values. ACT enhances psychological flexibility and overall well-being.

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) – An extension of CBT, DBT focuses on developing skills in emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness. Originally designed for individuals with intense emotions, it is highly effective in managing stress, impulsivity, and relationship challenges.

  • Somatic Based Therapy – A body-focused therapeutic approach that helps individuals process trauma and emotional distress through bodily awareness and movement. By tuning into physical sensations, clients can release stored tension and reconnect with a sense of safety and balance.

  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) – A practical, evidence-based therapy that helps individuals recognise and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours. By understanding the connection between thoughts, emotions, and actions, CBT equips people with tools to improve emotional resilience and mental well-being.

  • Play Therapy – A child-centred approach that allows children to express emotions, process experiences, and develop problem-solving skills through play. Using toys, storytelling, and creative activities, play therapy fosters emotional resilience and communication in a developmentally appropriate way.

  • Art informed therapies – A creative therapeutic approach that uses drawing, painting, and other artistic expression to explore emotions, process experiences, and facilitate healing. Art-based therapy is beneficial for individuals of all ages, providing a non-verbal outlet for self-discovery and emotional processing.

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) – A structured therapy that helps individuals process and resolve distressing past experiences, including trauma, phobias, and grief. EMDR promotes healing by transforming unhelpful thoughts and emotional responses, integrating more adaptive beliefs, and fostering greater self-awareness and engagement with life.
